Ubud Food Festival - ‘Every Flavor is a Story’

Ubud Food Festival - ‘Every Flavor is a Story’

A three-day culinary adventure with Indonesian food as the star, the Ubud Food Festival is Southeast Asia’s leading culinary event showcasing Indonesia’s diverse cuisine, innovative chefs and extraordinary local produce.

Ubud Food Festival is a major annual project of the Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati, with a vision of enriching the lives of Indonesians through community-building and cultural programs. It is the sibling event of Ubud Writers & Readers Festivaland Bali Emerging Voices Festival.

Founded in 2016, the Ubud Food Festival is an exciting adventure with Indonesian food as the star. Panning three days of special events, from cooking demos, food tours and talks, workshops and masterclasses, music and arts, films, markets and more. The festival celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of Indonesia’s culinary landscape.

Bringing together almost 8000 people in 2016, along with more than 60 culinary icons from across Indonesia and the globe, the festival celebrates culinary heritage, fresh and innovative ideas, all areas of the dynamic, ever-evolving culinary industry, and the stories we tell through food.

In 2017, the Ubud Food Festival will return for its third year from 12-14 May. Alongside Indonesian chefs, restaurateurs, producers and food professionals, celebrated culinary icons from around the world will dish up a program rich in fresh tastes and fresh ideas.

In 2017, the festival’s new theme is ‘Every Flavor is a Story’, this celebrates the history of Indonesian food, delving deeper into the ingredients, recipes and traditions and what they say about Indonesian culture, society, heritage and geography.

This year, the Ubud Food Festival will be infused with the theme ‘Every flavor is a story’. The theme celebrates Indonesia’s culinary heritage, in which every ingredient, recipe and culinary tradition tells a story of the archipelago’s history, geography and diverse cultures.

The theme also reflects on the journey from producer to plate; from forging relationships with local growers to fostering awareness of broader ecological and industry trends that are shaping Indonesia’s – and the world’s – culinary landscape.

Across the Festival’s three-day program, members of the culinary industry and food lovers alike will unpack flavors, traditions and regional influences to deepen their understanding of not just what food tells us – but of the stories we tell through food.

Top 5 Premium Sunday Brunch in Bali

Top 5 Premium Sunday Brunch in Bali

Sunday brunch in Bali is always a special treat and with any of these best dining options at Bali’s most popular resorts you explore an unlimited supply of world-class cuisine, from restaurants presenting multiple food stations that each showcase specialty delicacies from around the world, to open kitchens preparing mouth-watering morsels as you order. Although the best brunches in Bali might seem expensive, these are actually great value prices considering the quality and range of the dishes on offer, with something for whole family – including fun game corners and colourful and bountiful dessert stations reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s factory. Grown-ups also have their optional relaxing time with privilege day-access to the resort’s awesome pools and poolside lounges. Get ready to be spoiled at any of the 5 Best Sunday Brunches in Bali!

1. Boneka at St. Regis Bali Nusa Dua

Arrive at St. Regis Bali’s King Cole Bar for free flow cocktails which include the Bali Mary, the Bali resort’s own take on the famous blend, while admiring elegant décor and great views over the resort’s centrepiece water features and the distant Nusa Dua coast. By noon, proceed to Boneka where you will enjoy exquisite delicacies, the likes of eggs benedict, fresh crustacean delights such as crabs and lobsters, lobster egg omelettes, assorted dumplings, soups, cheeses from around the world, and wonderful desserts including a Valrhona chocolate fountain with all kinds of delightful bits to go with it. Highlights: Refined settings and world-class dining plus cocktails; a great four hours to spend in two separate venues at one of Bali’s most prestigious resorts.

In the evening, you can choose between a delicious a la carte menu or the legendary St. Regis Bali Buffet which has everything you could imagine, from Balinese seafood such as lobster and oysters, to Wagyu beef and other roasted meats. Main courses served at the buffet include tasting plates such as short ribs with truffle oil potato puree, Australian lamb chops, and tortellini with duck foie gras. At the end of the meal, you can finish on a sweet note with a taste of the Valrhona chocolate fountain. The buffet starts at IDR 790,000 (around USD 60) excluding drinks.

Dining at St. Regis Bali is a great treat, and although not the cheapest luxury meal you can find on Bali, you can rest assured that the ingredients are all incredibly good and the service is truly five-star.

Price Range: IDR 650,000 nett (includes aperitifs at King Cole Bar)

2. Soleil at The Mulia Nusa Dua

The Mulia Resort’s Soleil offers a fine dining brunch setting with a scenic beachfront. Although a strict dress code usually applies most of the time at Soleil, Sunday brunches here tend to be more on the casual side. Multiple stations present great cuisine from Europe, pan-Asia and awesome takes on local dishes. Live grills serve high-quality seafood and honey roasted ham, spit-roast chicken and lamb chops, while a long line of desserts makes that last trip round the food islands that much more tempting. Highlights: Beautiful interiors with an alfresco terrace overlooking the resort’s pool and ocean, live grills and an a la carte menu with eclectic dishes from around the world.

There are two brunch packages to choose from – one with juices, coffees and teas (IDR 539,000 or around USD 39) and another with wine and cocktails (IDR 879,000 or around USD 64). Soleil has a good selection of New World wines, including Paul Cluver of South Africa, Astrolabe from New Zealand and Chilean Concha Y Torro, while Soleil’s own signature cocktails to try include the Arancia Piccante Martini, a spicy chili-infused take on the Orange-Tini. Both the buffet line and a la carte menu feature a good mix of dishes – there are also selections with clearly Indonesian, Vietnamese and Thai influences, such as a variety of juicy satay selections representing different origins in Indonesia (Madura, Bali, Marangi and Cilacap), ‘gado gado’ vegetable salads, tom yum and Vietnamese spring rolls. Wine prices in Indonesia can be crazily high; the free-flow wine package is a great deal for connoisseurs.

Highlights from the first course menu include the Piovra alla Brace, grilled octopus with capers, lemon and rocket salad, which was a wonderful balance between freshness and textures, Pancetta Fresca grilled Kurobuta pork belly with pickled vegetables and balsamic dressing, Spaghetti Frutti di Mare with clams, shrimps, crab and squid, and Soupe au Pistou or Riviera style vegetable soup with pesto. For the main course, go for something meaty, such as the Pollo al’Aceto roast chicken doused in a white wine sauce and scented with Italian vinegar and thyme or Steak Frites, grilled hanger steak with mushroom sauce, fried potatoes and classical Fourme d'Ambert French cheese.

In between, the buffet line is there whenever you like, with more tempting morsels – from savouries, salads, cheese and meats… but do save some space for dessert. We eventually made our final round to the expansive dessert buffet, with a towering chocolate fountain and an amazing variety of confections to conclude dinner.

Price Range: IDR 549,000++ (includes free flow wines, beer and juices)

3. Starfish Bloo at W Retreat Seminyak

As the signature beachfront dining restaurant at the W Retreat in Seminyak, Starfish Bloo welcomes you to its ultra-chic settings with a spread out buffet showcasing an eclectic mix of pan-Asian cuisine. The Sunday brunches here usually have activity corners for kids and live music as well. The buffet features a ‘raw bar’ serving delicious items and imported cheeses, oyster and sushi bars, and a roast station. Attractive wine and champagne packages are available at IDR 1,100,000++ and 1,750,000 respectively.

Starfish Bloo is as much a treat for the eyes as it is for the palate. This outlet on the southwest shore of W Retreat’s lobby has an exotic ambience. Private tables for up to six are enclosed in towering cages that take the form of lobster traps adorning the restaurant’s centre. Exterior alternatives come in the form of two long tables – one with a shelter supported by huge columns in turquoise resin and adorned with designer Kotuku Fans, and another that is simply open for starlit communal feasts. These ‘Chef’s Tables’ are where you can enjoy special customised dinners fixed up by Chef de Cuisine Ashley Garvey.

On Sundays at noon, patrons flock with their families and friends to Starfish Bloo for the popular Sunday Brunch, where live music, spinning DJs and various kids’ activities provide a weekend treat for all. Within the restaurant is a raw bar, a long array of delish items and imported cheeses, an oyster bar decked with aquariums, as well as a sushi bar and a roast station. On the sand, blue starfish cushions and wood finishes provide a breezy option for beach lovers. As evening falls, the main central dining area comes to life with a blue undersea hue, thanks to the unique rattan mesh jellyfish-shaped lamps that hang from the ceiling.

Whether you're dining within in one of the ‘lobster traps’, admiring the luminous underwater illusions, outside at one of the Chef’s Tables, or near the sand and under the stars with fun blue neoprene starfish shaped body pillows, you’re in for some unique sights and tastes here.

Price Range: IDR 495,000++

4. Feast at Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort Kuta Beach

The ‘Sunday Market Brunch’ at Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort’s Feast restaurant features not only great buffet lines, but also brings a traditional art market scene to guests with handmade crafts and services from local artists and vendors. As the resort coins it, it is the only brunch where you can ‘sip, savour and shop’. From cold stations with fresh sushi and sashimi, full-sized roast stations, to selections of spirits with pralines, and grills beside a live fish tank, you enjoy a splendid buffet of Sheraton quality cuisine. Little ones have their own dining area with knee-level sweets and cake buffets.

Located street side of the Sheraton, with its outdoor patio the adjoining Kuta Beachwalk, the restaurant is an eye-catcher. Magenta lighting glows throughout its interiors and seating, and each station has a specialty cook on standby that also takes cook-to-order requests. Advance bookings are recommended, but most of the time Feast welcomes casual walk-ins. If you’re coming from the hotel side, your first view is a bar counter serving a variety of cocktails and beverages, with backlit ornate fixtures. Near the centre are small children’s dining tables and chairs next to a knee-level sweets and cakes buffet around a solid pillar. Families are well catered for at Feast.

Feast also offers a la carte selections. To start with, there is the 500g of poached tiger prawns served with lemon and horseradish and cherry tomatoes, or you can go first-class with the luscious vintage and premium Sturia caviar, which comes served with sour cream, Melba toast and traditional accompaniments. Mains include Kurobuta pork belly with truffle mash, curried lentils de puy, granny smith reduction and goat cheese foam for Rp. 178,000, while there’s seared barramundi served with steamy Balinese clams and chorizo at the same price. As an all-day dining venue, Feast’s four square tables on the outdoor wooden patio each have their own wide parasols. A live fish tank is set beside a stationed grill, which means you can take a pick of then have it freshly prepared in a jiffy. At only Rp.250,000 per adult, you get a splendid buffet spread with a great selection of Sheraton quality cuisine.

Price Range: IDR 333,000++

KLCC AIRPORT

Taiwan see u next time !!!!

Why I Love TAIWAN so much?

If you've never had Taiwanese breakfast, you're missing out. Fuhang Doujiang in Taipei has a line out the door every morning and the wait for soy milk, egg crepes, and fried dough sticks is worth it.

Every major city has at least one night market — and all of them are worth visiting to try local specialty snacks and shop for souvenirs. Taipei alone has several night markets, including Shilin and Raohe. The city of Keelung's night market is arguably the country's largest and most renowned.

That it is why i love Taiwan so much.
